Between 1936 and 1945, a National Socialist forced camp for Sinti and Roma was located at today's Otto-Rosenberg-Platz- the first of its kind. Around 1,000 people were held captive in wooden barracks and caravans under inhumane conditions. From March 1943, the National Socialists began deporting the inmates to Auschwitz-Birkenau. A memorial event is held on the site every June.
