History Park Former Moabit Cell PrisonLehrter Straße 5b
"Of all the suffering that fills this building, beneath the brickwork and iron bars, a breath is alive, a secret trembling..." This line is written in large letters on the five-meter-high wall of the former Moabit cell prison. It was written by the poet Albrecht Haushofer, who was incarcerated here from 1944 to 1945. The prison complex, built in the 19th century, comprised 520 individual cells in which the inmates were completely isolated from one another. The Prussian "model prison", built by Carl Ferdinand Busse, was in use until 1955. Today, the listed historical park with its sophisticated garden architecture is both a place of relaxation and a reminder of a dark chapter of Germany's past.
